  • I think Ernst’s reaction to Qutbuddin’s writing would be similar to his perspective on Nasr’s statement that Islam is a way of life. I don’t think Ernst would either agree (except on indisputable historical facts) or disagree with the chapter. He would simply see it as one Muslim perspective on the life of Muhammad, possibly representative of a common opinion in the Muslim community.

If I understand your question about perception and divinity, I will express my opinion as the following: As a Christian I believe that there is a difference between perception and divinity, or as I would rather put it (for clarifying purposes), perception and reality. We all have our perceptions of what reality is like, but none of our perceptions have any bearing on what reality is. It is possible that one religion is right about the divine and that all the others are wrong. It is possible for there to be a mixture of truth and falsehoods throughout all religions. And it is possible that all our perceptions are not reflecting reality at all.

Because I think there is a difference between our perceptions and reality, I find it important to connect religion with reality in a way that attempts to evade cherry picking evidence. I think if we seek the truth, we will become closer to God, the author of what is true.
